The Shackleton Rolleck in celtic green proudly takes its name from Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, Antarctic explorer born in County Kildare in 1874. In 1909 Shackleton established a new record for reaching the famed ‘Farthest South’ - 97 miles from the South Pole. However, Shackleton is perhaps most famous for leading the ‘Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition’, which was an attempt to cross the Antarctic continent, sea-to-sea, via the pole, in 1914-1917.

Shackleton’s famous ship, The Endurance, became crushed in pack ice, forcing the expedition to leave its decks and fend for themselves, taking to lifeboats for five harrowing days until they found the shores of Elephant Island.

From here, Shackleton and a small contingent of four other crewmen set off in one of the lifeboats for South Georgia, an inhabited island some 720 nautical miles away. After fifteen days at sea and walking and further thirty-two miles when they landed on South Georgia, Shackleton and his small crew managed to secure a rescue for the remainder of the crew they had left behind on Elephant Island. To this day, it is regarded as one of the most extreme and heroic examples of human endurance in the face of the natural elements.
